the relationship between a country, its military, and its ruling party/political system
simplest one: the military control the country and its politics. such as Mao, Militarism
Current China: military follow the party, party is the highest, which also rule the country. the party is manipulated by whom? president? prime secretary? a group of people, in nature the same as a few families, but all in the same party.
what's the model in the US? political is bipartisan, military? unknown.
of course
military is to protect the country's interest, which seems simple but can be defined in various ways. the people is not a reliable judge. they are significantly influenced by the media, which again may be a plethora or have a dominant voice.
fighting for the tribe is in the nature of human beings, ever since prime human become used to living in groups. a good army may not necessarily need individual intelligence, by which I mean personal interest over everything else. ultimate individual intelligence may provide a superb army, but human cannot be that trusted. human makes mistakes. a platoon of single minded soldier led by one intelligent unit is easy to find and can get things done.
