Software tool: OMENet++, SUMO
Hardware tool: GNURadio->USRP2
MATLAB just doesn't sound so professional. It can do something pretty fast at the beginning, but limited when you gets deeper. MATLAB is good when the problem is well defined, extracted above real-world mess, in other words, for science. For simulations and experiments, maybe something dirty would be more impressive.
