WSN is a wireless network, in which battery power is a finite resource, and, in most cases, it's required that every node in it should live as long as possible.
So, the requirements can be concluded into two rules:
- nobody dies too soon, nobody takes too much burden
- take as little resources as possible
The first rule stresses on fairness, while the other efficiency. And there comes a classic conflict.
A relative modern solution to this dilemma is (quite similar to today's policies in many societies), the poorer you are, the greater right you have to refuse taking responsibility(paying less tax), even if you can do it more efficiently than others. To keep as many people alive as possible, in many cases, the most proficient ones, or those who happen to be in the most suitable position, can take a rest and leave the job to others, say someone in the rural area.
